What is Diabetic Retinopathy ?

Diabetic retinopathy is a potentially sight-threatening condition resulting from long-term diabetes.

It occurs when elevated blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. This damage can lead to vision impairment or even blindness if left untreated. Regular eye exams for individuals with diabetes are crucial for early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy, as early stages may be asymptomatic. Timely intervention, such as laser therapy or surgery, can help prevent further vision loss and complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eye-related diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. Prolonged hyperglycemia can cause injury to the blood vessels in the retina, which may ultimately result in visual impairment.

Prevalent among diabetics is this complication. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately one-third of individuals diagnosed with diabetes suffer from diabetic retinopathy

During the initial phases, diabetic retinopathy might not manifest any discernible symptoms. Consistent eye examinations are essential for individuals with diabetes in order to detect the condition at an early stage, when symptoms may only manifest.

Although diabetic retinopathy cannot be completely averted, it can be substantially mitigated and its progression slowed through the implementation of lifestyle modifications, medication management, and routine monitoring.

For diagnosis, eye evaluations, including dilation, are crucial. Additionally, imaging modalities such as fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) may be employed to evaluate the degree of retinal injury.

Treatment is condition-specific. Laser therapy to seal seeping blood vessels, medication injections into the eye, and, in some instances, surgery are all viable options.
