What is Myopia?

Myopia, often known as nearsightedness or shortsightedness, affects many people worldwide.

Myopia is a condition, it is not a disease!! In this condition the eye is unable to focus properly, causing distant objects to appear blurry but the near objects appear clear. This occurs when the shape of the eye is elongated, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Myopia can affect people of all ages, but it typically begins in childhood and may progress throughout adolescence.

Symptoms of Myopia

- Squinting or straining to see distant objects

- Headaches or eye strain

- Difficulty seeing at night

- Needing to sit closer to the television or computer screen.

- Squeezing eyes or blinking it frequently

Diagnosis And Treatment for Myopia

Diagnosis

Myopia can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Our ophthalmologist will test visual acuity and use a variety of instruments to examine the shape of the eye and the ability to focus.

Treatment:

It only includes correction of refractive error in one of the following ways:
1. Spectacle correction
2. Contact Lens
3. Refractive surgeries like LASIK or LASEK

Frequently Asked Questions

Myopia, also referred to as nearsightedness, is a refractive eye disorder characterized by clear vision of adjacent objects but impaired ability to focus on distant objects. Light deflection occurs when the cornea is too curved or the ocular is too long, resulting in light being focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it.

Although it is impossible to alter a genetic predisposition, it is possible to mitigate the progression of myopia through lifestyle choices. Strategies such as engaging in regular reading, minimizing screen time, and spending time outdoors are potential measures to prevent or decelerate the progression of myopia in children.

Despite the fact that myopia typically worsens during adolescence and infancy, it stabilizes in early adulthood. Nonetheless, myopia can worsen into maturity in certain instances, particularly when left untreated. It is essential to have routine eye examinations to track its progression.

An increased likelihood of developing additional ocular complications, including glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment, is correlated with myopia, particularly in cases where the severity of myopia remains uncorrected. Early correction of myopia and routine eye exams can help reduce the risk of developing these complications.

Myopia can be surgically corrected using refractive procedures such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). Vision is enhanced through the reshaping of the cornea during these procedures. However, these procedures are not appropriate for all patients, and permanent consequences must be taken into account.

Although myopia is not generally considered curable, it is a condition that can be effectively managed and corrected via refractive surgery, contact lenses, spectacles, or orthokeratology. In addition, certain treatments have the objective of impeding the advancement of myopia, thereby presenting potential long-term advantages.
