What is black fungus?
Three things to know about black fungus:
- It is a very serious condition with 15% mortality. Hence it is extremely important to diagnose early and start the treatment immediately.
- It occurs because of the reduced immunity of the patient due to uncontrolled diabetes, Covid 19, steroids.

What are the symptoms of black fungus?
Since it is rhino orbit cerebral mucormycosis, it starts with the nose and goes onto the eye. Nasal discharge which is black in color and foul-smelling is the main symptom. Other symptoms include cold, fever, black patches on the palette, bulging of the eye, double vision, blurred vision, drooping of the upper eyelid, giddiness, and brain complications.

Early ENT check up. The doctor will take a swab and confirm whether it is fungal infection. An MRI scan is also necessary since it checks the extent of the disease. The patient will have to be admitted in a multispeciality hospital and iv liposomal amphotericin b injection will be given.
